Inter-University Translation Competition

The Inter-University Translation Competition is a unique competition since it is the only one of its type in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. No other similar competitions are held for undergraduate students of Saudi universities with respect to translation. The Competition, which is open to women only, was initiated by PSU’s Research & Translation Center (RTC) in April 2014. Four universities in Riyadh with translation degree programs participated.

  • King Saud University
  • Princess Noura Bint Abdulrahman
  • Imam Bin Saudi Islamic University
  • Prince Sultan University

The above quartet contributed to the development of the requirements and evaluation rubrics of the competition.
In the event’s fifth round in April 2018, the competition was held under the umbrella of the Translation & Authoring Center (TAC). That event attracted universities throughout the nation. Participating teams were from

  • King Saud University
  • King Abdulaziz University
  • Princess Noura Bint Abdulrahman University
  • Prince Sultan University
  • Effat University
  • Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University
  • University of Hail
  • Prince Sattam Bin Abdulaziz University

The competition also attracted the same sponsor for the third time, which was Riyadh Bank. The winners of the Competition were announced at the end of the day and plaques were awarded to all participating universities.

Competition Goals

In all its rounds, the competition has maintained the following goals:

  • create a healthy context for competition among translation students across the Kingdom
  • strengthen collaboration among translation programs across the Kingdom
  • celebrate the significance of translation and recognize excellence among its students

Competition Tracks

The competition included two main tracks: Written Translation Competition and Interpretation Competition. An exhibition that displayed the works of translation student and introduced the students to translation and language centers in Riyadh.

Refereeing Procedure

The refereeing of any competition is the key to its credibility. Hence, great care is taken to ensure the impartiality of the referees and the integrity of the competition procedure. The selected referees are from universities that are not participating in the competition to ensure that they are not supporting any of the candidates.
To ensure the credibility of the process, the refereeing is blind in the consecutive interpretation and the written translation tracks. The results are announced by the referees without any interference or even prior knowledge of the winning teams by the organizers. They also explain the strengths and weaknesses they noted to the audience.
