Mission

To provide a reliable, prompt and friendly information technology support service to the University community. To introduce and maintain recognized standards in installations of software, computers, networks and telecommunications equipment. To provide leadership and expertise in the planning and introduction of new information technology on campus to further the University's mission in teaching, research and administration.

About Computer Center

The PSU Computer Center was established in 1999 and is one of the independent (non-faculty) university units. The Center provides computer facilities to all staff, faculties and students of the University, together with advice, documentation and anything else necessary for their effective use. The facilities are available to all undergraduate students, providing IT support for personal research and training courses. The University Computer Center's activities are based upon various platforms equipment integrated in Local Networks with laser printer output that provide a wide range of software and applications, web developing and designing, database developing, as well as programming and system support to staff, lecturers and to PSU departments. The developing University Campus Network, which has been fully operational, improves the University communication infrastructure that links the existing information and computer resources with national and international networks. Following Internet services via the University Network are now available: e-mail, electronic news, file exchange. The University Computer Center has special support staff, whose task is to work closely with their colleagues from the other departments and faculties to assist in making the best use of the facilities.

Help Desk

 The PSU Help Desk, part of PSU Computing Services, is dedicated to providing prompt, courteous and effective service to the PSU community. Experienced staffs troubleshoot all aspects of supported desktop computing, Five days a week during the semester and during regular University business hours between semesters. Help Desk Location & Regular Hours Located in R-213 of the Computer Center on PSU Campus, the Help Desk is open five days a week during the academic year. During all Semesters the Help Desk is open regular University working hours of 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Saturday through Wednesday.

A Help Desk Consultant, Lab Consultant, or staff member will normally be available during the following hours.

Labs & Class Rooms
These are stocked with Compaq personal computers. Software available includes common word processing, spreadsheet, database and statistical packages. Laboratory workstations also have access to host computers and network services such as e-mail, printer etc.

Additionally student access points are available in the PSU library. These machines can access the web but they only have basic software installed compared to the other Computing Labs.

Remember that you will need your login and password to access the computers and the internet and printing services.

General Notes:
- Equipment and furniture in the laboratories should not be moved. Movement may strain or break network, printer and power cables - resulting in less equipment for your use.
- Use the printers and paper provided wisely. Do not remove paper for later use. Report shortages and other paper problems promptly to the Help Desk, which manages the laboratory.
- Please leave the laboratories tidy. Place chairs back under desks and consign scrap printout to the rubbish bins provided. Eating, drinking, or smoking is not permitted in any of the laboratories or the student study area.
- Please report equipment/network faults to the Help Desk promptly. Indicate the machine that is at fault and the nature of the fault. The fault you fail to report properly may cause frustration and delay to other students (and yourself) with deadlines to meet.
- Technical staff is not available to instruct students in the operation of teaching software packages.
- Regularly check the notice boards provided in each laboratory. Notices of important system events, e.g. special room bookings, system downtime etc., will be posted there.
- Don't monopolize laboratory equipment. Next time, it may be YOU who is waiting to use it.
- The use of any of the systems for games is not permitted.

Networking
PSU provide a secure network for our educational, research, and administrative needs and services. You may connect devices to the campus network at appropriate connectivity points: voice/data jacks. You may not extend or modify the network. You may not install hardware devices such as, but not limited to, bridges, switches, wireless access points, or hubs without explicit permission from IT Security.

Computer Center Services
- PSULink
PSU Link is PSU's Campus-Wide Information System. This system of online documents provides information about PSU University and also serves as a gateway to the Internet for people at PSU. Any computer attached to the Internet, which includes nearly every computer on campus, can access it.

It is envisaged that PSU Link will eventually be the prime information source on campus containing items such as course and unit outlines, photographs of staff members, PSU news and announcements, telephone books, research papers, online discussion forums, library catalogues, and information about PSU resources such as lecture theatres.

As your gateway to the Internet, PSULink can help you find information anywhere in the world as cheaply and easily as possible.


- How do I gain access?
To access PSULink and the World Wide Web, you need a computer with network access and a web browser program such as Netscape (TM). Netscape (TM) is freely available to staff and students at PSU University from your local support person or the Public server or to go Downloads.


- Internet
PSU CC has leased line to Internet with good bandwidth to facility to its users and its proved the facility to its staff, faculty and students Internet browsing, FTP downloads and other Internet facilities for educational purpose.


- Electronic Mail
The University actively promotes the use of e-mail on campus and makes e-mail accounts easily available to staff, Faculty and students.

- NewsGroups
The news database on info contains more than hundred articles in different groups.
News can also be accessed within PSULink. More information about various newsgroups both in and outside PSU is available.


- Printing
PSU CC Provide Network printers in each department and some personal printers to its staff, faculties and students for educational purpose and the print is monitored and a print quota allotted to users to control the print
