In
the beginning of this semester Prince Sultan private university opened a
new department. This department features the interior design field.
This interior design department has highly qualified program and
faculty. With the opening of this department 32 students transferred
from other departments within the university enrolled and 113 students
applied for the interior design department. In addition, this department
occupies the north section of the ground floor. This section includes
fully equipped interior design staff office, head of the department
office, resource/ material room, two studio/drafting labs, three
interior design classes, and a fully equipped hallway to represent
student work and designs. On the other hand, staff members of this
department is highly qualified and have real experience: Latifah Faisal
Al Sudairy, Master of Science in Interior Design,
instructor and the department coordinator, Dr. Marisa, PHD in
architecture, professor, and Jacki, Master of Art, instructor as well as
Walla, Master in Architecture, Assistant instructor.
From an interior
designer experience I think every interior designer must try to
understand the interrelationships of both local and global factors as
well as trying to make positive design decisions on both the macro and
micro level. In addition, I always think that any interior designer must
be cognized of human needs, cultural differences, and all links
necessary for responsible environments. I really think that the Interior
Designer of today and Tomorrow must take up all the challenges of
creating more exciting and more technologically advanced environments in
less and less space. Every interior designer is involved with creating
or modifying interior environments, including the structure, the
life-support system, the furnishings, and the equipment. In addition, a
good interior designer must take into consideration and work with
lighting, color, materials, human behavior, and accessories as well as
modifying or remodeling. Moreover, the profession of interior design is
becoming more important every day as we remodel and build more interior
environments.
The Education of the
Professional Interior Designer aims for: the Highest Level of
creativity and the highest level of skill in designing for our
increasing complex and technological society. As the field of Interior
Design becomes an increasingly regulated profession, education and
practice will continue to emphasize a solid expertise in designing for
people, their environments, and better quality of life for all.
Any professional
Interior Designer must be qualified by education, experience, and
examination to enhance the function and quality of the interior spaces.
A lot of people think that interior design is the same as architecture.
It is not the same, but it is closely related to architecture and other
professions. Moreover. Interior design is considered to be a distinct,
creative professional field closely allied with other design
professions. Interior design has allied professions:
* Decorator: the
Decorator role evolved over time. There are differences between the
decorator and designer. Decorators are
involved mostly with decorative
surface treatments, Accessories, furniture,
and furnishings
* Architect:
the Architect today has been educated, served an internship, and been
tested by exam to become registered (licensed).
Architects design buildings, including
the structural, electrical, mechanical and other systems.
* Landscape
Architecture: is a separate profession concerned with the exterior
environment and has its
own licensing laws.
* Other
professionals:
1. Industrial Designers: work integrally
with the interiors industry to
produce furniture and other
accessories.
2. Engineer: is also part of the team
designing environments. They
are licensed and generally
specialized in such areas as electrical,
mechanical, structural, or
acoustical engineering.
Interior Design has
grown rapidly and undergone many changes since the 1960s. Today, the
role of the Interior Designer has expanded to reflect the highly complex
problems that environments pose in our continually changing
technological society. Office buildings, hospitals, shopping centers,
restaurants, schools, airports, residential communities, entertainment
centers, hotels, and public buildings are but a few of the areas in
which highly skilled interior designers team up with architects,
engineers, planners, and developers to create better environment for a
better quality of life. Therefore,
“Interior Design” became the most recognized title for those who planned
surface embellishments of interior spaces.
I am hoping that
every student enrolled in this department will take class work and
assignments more serious. The field of design takes a lot of creativity,
practice and work. The work that a professional interior designer must
do for every project takes time and hard work. In order to be one of the
best and widely known interior designers you must work hard, come to
class in time, manage your time and be creative.
