A Successful College Student:

Success is a mixture of skills, competence, hard work and luck. As a student you will learn and develop and explore the options to be successful in the college. Many students come to college because it is just the next logical step, but they lack direction. I believe that getting here is the easy part. Once you are here, you need to think about how to get the most out of college. You need to know the right tools to meet the standards and the expectations from you being a prospective college student. These tools are the goal setting, motivation, communication and organizational pattern. The lectures teaches you how to get the most out of the textbook, retain the material, prepare for and take an exam and how to motivate yourself and organize yourself to be more efficient.

“We want students to think about the value of their classes even when they don’t think that they are related to their majors. Economics may not seem important as a long term goal to a student but it is. It can teach students how well the domestic and international economy is on the verge of prosperity or deterioration and also understand the actual facts and figures of their country’s economic growth. This all can make the students more marketable and more challenging employees once they graduate and we want them to understand how all these things are connected in the big picture.”  Ms Amena Shahid

Therefore the desired ingredients of a successful student are:

·         Possessing a positive attitude

·         Being flexible

·         Having knowledge about academic policies and deadlines

·         Using good communication skills

 ·        Having good time management skills

·         Being able to organize yourself

·         Having a clear sense of your goal

·         Being independent

·         Knowing when and how to seek help

·         Strong commitment to completing your degree

Career Exploration and Planning:
Have you ever asked this question to yourself as what is career exploration?  The answer may come in many different ways but being an undergraduate student it is highly important to understand what does this term actually means.

It is to understand and learn about yourself and the world of work, identify the potential occupations and the most important factor to realize how important is to organize your goals and to create an effective strategy to achieve them in timely manner.

Let’s start with the first topic and that is to learn about yourself. Do you know what this term means? If not then let me introduce you to a new term. Identify your skills and capabilities and explore the occupation where you can be successful. Did you know that you may not have the skills for a certain job but always remember that you can learn? Once you have identified your skills and abilities you can strengthen them. These skills that you posses now are good enough but your work and your work assignments may require some other skills and you can develop those skills by taking a short course, read intellectual books by famous authors or join a training program at work to prepare yourself for success.

 TIP:

To develop skills and confidence:

·         volunteer in community services

·         take extra classes

·         take a Coop program

Ask these question when you are identifying the potential occupations:

·         How well does this match my current skills and interest?

·         How well does this match my life style

Regardless of where you are in your career decision making process you can start taking steps now to find a career that’s right for you.

It’s important to start planning for future now. To make a good, informed decision, you need facts, such as education and skill requirements. Ask yourself questions, such as does this occupation really appeal to me? How well does it fit with my interests and values? What skills are important for the occupation?  Further research the occupation (s) you have identified and determine what skills, education, and experience are required and finally talk with your parents, teachers, and other people in the working world about your options.

 Work Values:
Understanding what you value about your work is important in exploring various occupations and planning for your future.

Use this checklist to get a better idea of what’s important to you.
