The China Alternative, China’s Economic Transformation & New Global Dynamic Time and Place Sunday, 24th January, 2010 7:00 – 9:30 PM PSU Main Auditorium Speaker Dr. George T. Yu , ![]() Abstract China's rise to global prominence over the past 30 years has captured the attention of the world. Successful economic development has long attracted attention and emulation by others, hence the growing awareness of a presence of the 'China Alternative' as a guide to economic transformation and growth. The 'Chinese Alternative' is put into the context of today multifaceted global dynamic and brought into higher relief by tracing China's transformation from one of the world's poorest lands of just a century ago, to boasting the world's second largest economy in 2009. Starting in 1949 the People's Republic of China with the assistance of the Soviet Union laid the foundation for growth prior early on in the first 30 years of the nation before stalling due to ideological excesses. In the post-1980 period pragmatic leadership crafted policies that led to 10% annual growth. The formula for this was an admixture of three elements 1) investments, 2) consumption and 3) exports. China's rapid growth was not, however, without problems with most cued to growing economic imbalances between sector, regions and along the urban/rural divide. These inequalities are being addressed as China continues to transform itself to insure its future growth. Being the first of the major economies to return to solid growth following the 2008 Global Economic Crisis underscores the presence of an 'Alternative' for dealing with the global dynamic. George T.
