The Teaching and Learning Strategy (TLS) is supported and guided by the mission of Prince Sultan University, which is: “Prince Sultan University aims to provide the Middle East with a quality education to the highest international standards. In its efforts towards a successful and responsible life-long learning, PSU integrates modern technology, pedagogy, and human values for the advancement of scientific research, productivity, and leadership towards a more meaningful social life. PSU is committed to the effective management of institutional resources to optimize its multiple roles as a catalyst for new learning opportunities, national and international partnerships, continuous studies, professional growth, community service, and diversity in educational horizons for the good of humanity.” The goal of the Teaching and Learning Strategy is to reflect the University’s mission and core values. It also aims to reflect PSU’s strive for excellence in teaching and learning. This strategy seeks to ensure the quality of teaching offered at PSU, to continuously enhance it, and to amend it where appropriate. This should lead to enhancing the students’ satisfaction and overall experience. The strategy will be implemented by the Teaching and Learning Center, which reports directly to the Vice Rector of Quality Assurance. The strategy will be periodically reviewed and, if needed, updated by the Teaching and Learning Center. Aims of the University Teaching and Learning Strategy:

What is the mission statement of the Teaching and Learning Center (TLC)?
The Teaching and Learning Center (TLC) initiates best practices in teaching and assessment at all levels, where the ultimate purpose is to ensure a professional commitment and to promote the enthusiasm of all teachers in order to implement an optimum teaching and learning environment for students at PSU. In fostering effective and innovative teaching pedagogy and practices, we focus on demonstrable outcome-based and problem-based student-centered approaches where the learner and the outcomes are the core and the goal of the teaching process. In so doing, the TLC offers institutional support, training and guidance in the form of workshops, seminars, and consultations for both teachers and students, and fosters all manner of faculty/student interchange and responsiveness.
What are the normal timings of TLC workshops and seminars?
Normally, TLC offers 1-hour sessions and, in few cases, 2 to 4-hour sessions. The timing of short workshops is 1 hour, and they are mostly conducted during the break time from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm. In the case of detailed workshops and training, the timing starts after classes, which is 3:00 pm and onwards. Most importantly, the timings are mentioned in every TLC announcement.
Where is the location of TLC events?
The location depends on the event nature and availability of venues. Mostly, they are conducted in Prince Sultan Hall (PSH) in building 101. In the case of hardware needs, they are conducted in labs. Most importantly, the venues are mentioned in every TLC announcement.
Is there any fixed time to visit TLC for any query and decision?
No, we encourage everyone to write us on TLC email (firstname.lastname@example.org) for any query. You can also fix an appointment to meet for queries and discussions.
How can I get information for any TLC workshop and training?
TLC usually emails every one for any general workshop and training. You can also locate our calendar of events under the TLC page located on PSU’s website. Follow us on Twitter too!
Can I request for a workshop on a specific topic?
Yes, you can write TLC but TLC seek requirement for any specific demand of workshop or training from every department and deanship. In the case of administrative staff, the TLC seeks requirements from Director Human Resources for any workshop or training for staff at PSU.
Is there any deadline to apply?
No, there is no such deadline for workshops, but in case of workshops and training offering limited seats, then there is a deadline, and you need to apply as per guidelines given in the TLC announcement.
In the case of a late session, will the bus service be provided for residencies offered by PSU?
Normally, there is NO bus service provided except for special cases where it can be provided if requested in advance, and it will be announced by TLC with the timings.
Do I need to bring any material or hardware (Laptop) for TLC events?
No, there is no such mandatory requirement, but you can bring a notepad for taking notes because the material of every event is shared with the participants via email or Moodle. In specific cases, the TLC may request to bring laptops, but it will depend on the specific event and venue.
Is there any benefit to attending the TLC events?
Yes, each event covers professional development units, and you will be given a certificate of completion after filling an online evaluation, which is sent to your mentioned email in attendance sheet the next day of the event.
Are there any fees for the PSU community to attend TLC events?
NO, there are no fees charged by the TLC. However, kindly note that in case the need arises to charge a fee for a specific event, the TLC will announce it.
How can I register for TLC events?
There is no registration required to attend TLC events. In specific cases, the registration link will be emailed to all.

Where can I upload my record of professional development (PD)?

For the administrative staff, all PD sessions should be reported to both the HR department and your department head when it happens.
When should I upload my information for professional development (PD)?
Reporting the PD sessions attended or presented for faculty members, should be uploaded on a regular basis. The data will be collected and shared with the department chairpersons prior to the completion of the annual faculty performance evaluations. Reporting the PD sessions for the administrative staff should be done immediately to the HR office.
How can I be involved with professional development and the TLC?
The center welcomes both faculty members and administrators to share their expertise with their colleagues. There is a proposal form that can be completed and submitted to the TLC for any necessary approvals.
Does the TLC have an office to contact?
Yes, the TLC has an office at the women’s side, but for the men’s side, they can contact the Associate Director of the TLC directly.
Are new faculty members required to attend the Course Design Institute offered by the TLC?
All new faculty members are required to attend the course design series offered by the Teaching and Learning Center.
What do I need to know about designing a course at PSU?
Each faculty member that joins PSU is responsible for the design and implementation of the individual courses and/or multi-section courses as assigned to them in compliance with the University, College, and Department Regulations. In addition, all faculty members are encouraged and advised to apply Outcome-Based Education (OBE) principles at all levels of curriculum development. The process starts at the top by articulating the Program Learning Outcomes (PLO’s) and propagates down to the course level, where instructors derive and articulate Course Learning Outcomes (CLO’s). The most important OBE principle at the course level is the principle of constructive alignment, according to which instructional strategies and assessment tasks should be aligned with the course learning outcomes.

What kind of support for curriculum design is provided by the TLC?
Workshops and consultations are provided to continuously enhance the process of curriculum design and review in that attempt to support the colleges’ efforts to continuously enhance their programs.
Am I eligible to submit for the Teaching Award?
The only requirement for the teaching award Candidates is that they must be full-time teachers at Prince Sultan University and must have completed a minimum of three consecutive years’ of teaching at PSU at the time of application. Furthermore, applicants must be at the rank of Language instructor or higher.
When do you announce the Teaching Award Winners across the colleges and the Rector’s distinguished teaching award?
The Prince Sultan University Rector’s Award for Distinguished Teaching and the PSU Awards for Outstanding Teaching shall be formally announced at the annual end-of-year gathering of Prince Sultan University faculty and staff or the opening address at the beginning of the academic year hosted by the Rector.
