Professor Dr. Mohammad Nurunnabi
In a significant development for sustainable development initiatives in the Gulf region, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has established a formal partnership with Prince Sultan University (PSU) to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through international collaboration on data gathering and measurement.
High-Level Strategic Meeting Establishes Framework for Cooperation
On June 5, 2024, UNESCO's Regional Office for the Gulf States and Yemen convened a pivotal online meeting with Dr. Ahmed Al-Yamani, President of Prince Sultan University, to formalize a letter of intent establishing common provisions and procedures for strategic cooperation between the UNESCO Regional Office for the Gulf States and Yemen and PSU's Center for Sustainability and Climate (CSC).
The meeting outlined the framework for a collaborative partnership focused on advancing SDG implementation through systematic data collection, measurement, and analysis across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region and beyond.
Establishing SDG Achievement Platform for Higher Education
The primary objective of this UNESCO-PSU partnership is the joint development of an SDG Achievement Platform and Network specifically designed for higher education institutions throughout the GCC countries and extending to international partners. This ambitious initiative positions Prince Sultan University as a regional hub for SDG data coordination and academic collaboration.- The platform will serve as a comprehensive resource enabling higher education institutions to:
- Systematically gather and measure SDG-related data across multiple dimensions of sustainable development
- Share best practices and lessons learned in SDG implementation within academic contexts
- Coordinate research efforts focused on sustainability challenges specific to the Gulf region
- Build capacity among institutions to contribute meaningfully to national and international SDG reporting mechanisms
- Foster knowledge exchange between GCC institutions and global partners
International Collaboration on Data Gathering and Measurement
Prince Sultan University's participation in this international collaboration underscores the critical importance of robust data collection and measurement systems for tracking progress toward the 2030 Agenda. Through this partnership, PSU will contribute to developing standardized methodologies and frameworks for SDG data gathering that can be adopted across multiple institutions and national contexts.
The collaboration aligns with SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by strengthening the means of implementation and revitalizing global partnerships for sustainable development through enhanced data, monitoring, and accountability mechanisms.
Strategic Focus on COP16 and Global South Partnerships
Partners have committed to collaborative engagement on the 16th Conference of the Parties (COP16) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, reflecting shared priorities around climate action, land degradation, and environmental sustainability—issues of particular relevance to the Gulf region.
Significantly, the partnership includes a strategic focus on developing meaningful collaborations with Global South partners. This South-South cooperation approach recognizes that sustainable development challenges and solutions in the Gulf region share important commonalities with other developing and emerging economies, creating opportunities for mutual learning and joint action.
Regional Leadership in Sustainable Development
This UNESCO partnership reinforces Prince Sultan University's position as a leading institution in sustainability research, education, and policy development within Saudi Arabia and the broader Gulf region. Through the Center for Sustainability and Climate, PSU continues to bridge academic excellence with international development priorities, contributing substantively to both national Vision 2030 objectives and global SDG targets.
The collaboration represents a concrete mechanism through which PSU can amplify its impact on sustainable development outcomes, leveraging UNESCO's global networks and convening power while contributing the university's research capacity, technological capabilities, and regional expertise.
Building Capacity for Evidence-Based SDG Implementation
By participating in this international data gathering and measurement initiative, Prince Sultan University will enhance its institutional capacity to contribute to evidence-based policymaking and program design for sustainable development. The systematic collection and analysis of SDG-related data enables more effective monitoring of progress, identification of implementation gaps, and adaptive management of interventions.
This partnership also strengthens Saudi Arabia's contribution to global SDG monitoring frameworks, ensuring that the Kingdom's sustainable development achievements and challenges are appropriately documented and shared with the international community.
