Smart Systems Engineering Laboratory at the College of Engineering develops a new technology for early detection of brain tumors

Dr. Mohamed Marey, a faculty member at the Department of Communications and Networks Engineering and director of Smart Systems Engineering Laboratory at the College of Engineering, was able to invent a new technology to detect cancerous tumors in the head region and determine their size. Researchers from different universities participated in the innovation process, including King Saud University, Menoufia Universities, Mansoura and Kafr El-Sheikh Universities in Egypt. This new technology was published in the world-renowned IEEE Access.

This technique is based on measuring the reflection coefficient of a linear array of antennas. The laboratory results showed good agreement with simulation models and calculations. The proposed technology is characterized by medical compatibility with human bodies, ease of application, quality of contact, and safety for patients, in addition to its ability to detect micro-tumors with a diameter of 2.5 mm.
It is worth noting that Smart Systems Engineering Laboratory at the College of Engineering was established in August 2020. It is concerned with multidisciplinary topics, including wireless and optical communications - networks and the Internet of things - as well as smart cities. Medical applications are among the most prominent areas adopted by the laboratory, which would benefit the community and contribute to the Kingdom's vision 2030.
